Police close book stall for 'hurting religious sentiments'

Police have shut down the stall of Badwip Publications at the Amar Ekushey Boi Mela, with allegations of “selling book that hurts religious sentiments”.

Shahbagh police station Officer-in-Charge Abu Bakr Siddique told the Dhaka Tribune: “We have shut the stall as we have learned through social media that Badwip Publications is selling a book entitled “Islam Bitarka” that hurts religious sentiments.

Shamsuzzaman Manik, publisher of Badwip Publications, has compiled the book “Islam Bitarka”.

When contacted, Dr Jalal Ahmed, the fair committee member secretary, said: “I have been informed the matter. But, I have not yet found any written allegation against the publications.”

In the last Ekushey Boi Mela, Bangla Academy shut down the Rodela Prokashani stall on the allegation of publishing and selling a translated book on Prophet Muhammad's biography, which “hurts religious sentiment of people.”
