Minister hopeful of unearthing secrets soon

Update : 12 Feb 2016, 10:27 AM

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal has expressed hope that the secrets behind the Sagar-Runi murder case will be unearthed soon.

"The investigation will obviously take some time...the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) is sincerely working to reveal the real cause behind the murder of the journalist couple", Kamal was quoted by BSS as saying.

The minister made the remarks in response to a question at a function at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) in the city on Friday.

Asked about former home minister's assurance to identify and arrest the killers within 48 hours, Kamal said: "I cannot give any specific timeframe. I will repeatedly say that I am hopeful."

On February 11, 2012, Sagar, news editor of Maasranga TV, and Runi, senior reporter of ATN Bangla, were killed in their rented flat at West Rajabazar of Dhaka. Runi’s brother Nowsher Alam Roman filed a case with the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police later.

Since the murder, there have been at least 146 hearing sessions at the court of Dhaka’s chief metropolitan magistrate.

According to case documents, 158 people have been interrogated. Investigators also recorded statement of the couple’s only son Mahir Sawar Megh.

As part of the probe, RAB sent 50 pieces of evidence to a US lab, which identified two samples and said no matter who the killers were, their DNA must match with those two samples.
