Update : 11 Feb 2016, 06:56 PM

The government has taken initiatives to establish an autistic academy in the capital to raise autistic children like normal children through various training programmes.

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid yesterday told the parliament initiatives were taken to establish the autistic academy under the “Establishment of Autistic Academy” project of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education.

In reply to a query, the minister said three acres of land in Purbachal was acquired to establish the academy.

He said there would be two separate hostels, each with a 100-seat capacity, at the academy to accommodate boys and girls.

“Apart from this, there will be therapy systems in the hostels and game zones to help autistic children lead a normal life. An initiative has been taken to train 3,100 teachers by this year to bring autistic children into mainstream education,” said Nahid.

State Minister for Social Welfare Promod Mankin also told the parliament the number of people suffering from autism in the country stands at 38,678.
