Two 'human smugglers' on trial over Aylan Kurdi's death

Update : 11 Feb 2016, 12:33 PM

Two alleged human smugglers have been placed on trial for causing the death of Aylan Kurdi, a 3-year-old Syrian refugee who washed up on a Turkish shore after the boat he was in capsized last year.

The men, both Syrian nationals, will face up to 35 years in prison if they are found guilty on charges of human trafficking and manslaughter, reports The Independent.

The duo -- Muwafaka Alabash and Asem Alfrhad -- are accused of causing the deaths of five people, including Aylan, "through deliberate negligence".

Aylan was travelling with his father, mother and brother Galip from Bodrum in Turkey to the Greek island of Kos when their boat capsized.

The images that followed, showing the small boy lying face down in the sand, sparked a huge reaction to the crisis of people risking their lives fleeing conflict areas to reach Europe.
