Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid has said Dhaka University is not the Oxford of East rather it is a popular saying or perception as there is no document of such claim.
Stating that Dhaka University is not in the top 100 universities of the world, Leader of the Opposition Raushan Ershad posed question to the minister what is the reason for not being in the list.
“There is no documental evidence that Dhaka University is the Oxford of East. It is a popular saying. People say Dhaka University is the Oxford of East and we became used to saying it repeatedly,” the minister said responding to Raushan in the parliament on Thursday.
“In the past 50 years, I have been listening that the quality of education is decreasing. After publishing results every year, it was said pass rate increased but quality dropped. If it was true then what would be our situation today? This claim is not true.
“But it is true that we could not achieve world standard quality. Quality is not decreased rather increased and it should be increased more.”
In response to another query that private universities in Bangladesh issue fake Phd degree, the minister said fake Phd was available not only in Bangladesh but also in the abroad.
“Not only in Bangladesh, but people bring Phd degree from Europe, America. There were many people sitting there to issue Phd degree,” he said.
Nahid also mentioned that private universities in Bangladesh do not have any right to issue any Phd degree.
