The BNP has decided to bring changes in the party charter as election will be held for the party’s senior vice-chairman post like the chairperson post.
Party acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir made the disclosure at a press briefing held in the party's Nayapaltan headquarters in the capital on Thursday afternoon.
Fakhrul informed that BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia approved the necessary amendment of the party charter at the party’s standing committee meeting on Wednesday night.
"As per recommendation of party’s standing committee, party chairperson approved the necessary amendment of party charter’s article 19 (A),” Fakhrul said.
Party’s senior vice-chairman post was created in 2009 party council and Tarique Rahman was appointed on the post. Earlier, senior joint secretary general post was also created for him. As per party charter, in the absence of party chairperson, party’s senior vice chairman will enjoy the power of party chairperson.
Party sources said, this time Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman will also contest for the chairperson and senior vice-chairman posts respectively.
The BNP spokesperson also said an election commission was formed to elect party chairperson and vice chairman.
Fakhrul said party’s standing committee member Jamiruddin Sircar was made the chairman of the commission while Harun Al Rashid was made member and Aminul Huq was made member secretary.
“The commission will announce the election schedule in due time and will take necessary steps,” he said.
The BNP leader also said 15 sub-committees were formed ahead of party’s national council.
Regarding the council venue, Fakhrul said BNP is yet to get any response from police to use Suhrwawardy Udyan as council venue.
“Our national council will be held on March 19. We have announced the date. We have sought three venues for the council. We are yet to be confirmed but hopeful to get confirmation within a day or two.”
However, a standing committee member seeking anonymity told the Dhaka Tribune that the council will be held on Basundhara Convention Centre.
