Two alleged members of banned extremist organisation Gono Mukti Fauz have been killed during a reported gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) members in Shostipur village of Kushtia's Sadar upazila.
The shootout took place in the village near to the Kushtia-Jhenaidah highway early Thursday, reports Bangla Tribune, a sister concern of the Dhaka Tribune.
The deceased are Akauddin Hia, 45, and Liakat Ali, 40. Both are residents of Mrittikapara village under Islami University police station of the district. The corpses were sent to Kushtia Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
RAB 12 Kushtia Camp Commander Mosaddek Ibn Mujib said they, on a tip-off, raided a bamboo cluster in Shostipur village around 3:30am Thursday while Gono Mukti Fauz members including the duo were in a secret meeting to plan act of sabotage.
Sensing their presence the outlaws started firing at the elite force members forcing them to retaliate.
However, at one stage the outlaws managed to flee the spot and RAB found the bullet-hit bodies of Akauddin and Liakat there, the commander also said.
Two foreign-made pistols, two firearms and 12 rounds of bullet were discovered from the scene.
RAB 12 Commander Mosaddek Ibn Mujib claimed that Akauddin and Liakat were members of Gono Mukti Fauz and they were accused in several cases.
