The mayor of Sreebardi municipality in Sherpur was admitted to hospital as he sustained critical injuries after a leopard attacked him yesterday.
Abu Sayeed, also a local Awami League leader, was attacked by the leopard that came down from a hill near the border with India in the morning and hid in a forest under the municipality’s Jaalkata area.
Locals later rescued the mayor from the leopard and beat it to death in the presence of hundreds of onlookers.
Sayeed was first taken to a hospital in Sreebardi but was later transferred to Sherpur District Hospital.
For better treatment, the mayor was admitted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, said Sherpur Civil Surgeon Dr Anwar Hossain.
S Alam, officer-in-charge of Sreebardi police station, said the leopard measured around 4-4.5 feet in length.
Monirul H Khan, a zoology professor at Jahangirnagar University, said there are some leopards in the hills located in the border areas but there is no official figure.
“Leopards are endangered in Bangladesh but not abroad,” he added.
