Poetry makes a mark at book fair

Update : 10 Feb 2016, 08:11 PM

Poets continued to publish new titles enriching Bangla literature as new arrivals at Amar Ekushey Book Fair over the last few days included a good number of poetry books.

Seasoned poets, using their imagination and philosophy, have described life and struggles involving people, love, romance and patriotism in their works.

Poetry enthusiasts roamed the fair, browsing poetry books in stalls to look for titles of both renowned and new poets.

Celebrated poet Asad Chowdhury said an increasing number of young writers in the country are showing a keen interest in writing poems compared to other literature sections.

“This is really a matter of great happiness as new poets are joining the circle. Also, what is noticeable among them is that they intend to go beyond the existing forms of poem and are trying to come up with new forms. Certainly, they need time to adjust to their new forms of poetry writing,” he said yesterday.

“The style of writing of the young writers is excellent and their writing do have images and metaphors. I am quite optimistic about their writing,” Asad added.

Mazhar Sircar, a young poet who was at the fair, said: “It has been said that readers are less enthusiastic about poetry but this is just a lie. There are many who read and love poems.”

“It is difficult to write poetry. A good poem needs to reflect the philosophy of the poet, his inner feelings and imagination. Bangla poems have been of very good standards since long,” said prominent writer Serajul Islam Chowdhury.

“It has been observed that the practice of philosophy in poetry has become very limited nowadays. Some write without thinking deeply about the subject and that is not positive at all,” he remarked.

Yesterday was the tenth day of the fair and 28 new poetry titles were published, taking poetry books published so far to 230.

Also, 182 novels, 156 short stories and 59 essays have so far been published at the fair.

Abosar Prakashan has published five new poetry collections of five famed poets - Nirmalendu Goon, Al Mahmud, Ahsan Habib, Syed Shamsul Haque and Shamsur Rahman.
