Prangonemor’s new play on Tagore

Update : 10 Feb 2016, 06:36 PM

Well known for various stage productions of Rabindranath Tagore, theatre troupe Prangonemor brings a new play on him, Ami o Rabindranath, which premieres today at the Experimental Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy at 6:30pm. The premiere will be inaugurated by writer and playwright Syed Shamsul Haq. The troupe will hold another staging tomorrow, at the same hall.

Nuna Afroz has written and directed the play alongside playing the lead role.

The play revolves around a girl (played by Nuna Afroz) who visits one of Tagore’s old residence with her friend. While roaming around the place, the girl abruptly meets Tagore himself in a secluded area. As if she was living in a trance, she follows Tagore, accepting his offer of a tour of the whole place. As the play progresses, we see Tagore in four different phases of his life from a 21-year-old young firebrand to grey-haired intellectual. The girl engages in conversation with Tagore’s, talking about his works and different aspects of his personal life.

Ananta Hira, Awal Reza, Ramiz Raju, Touhid Biplob and Sarowar Saikat are playing the other prominent roles. Nuna Afroz designed costumes and the stage while Ramiz Raju composed music and Toufique Rabin designed the lights.

Prangonemor’s continual efforts to bring Tagore’s plays on stage is one that deserves appreciation. The troupe’s previous stage productions include Shaymaprem, Swadeshi, Raktokarobi and Shesher Kobita, all of which have garnered plaudit from home and abroad.
