Very soon lawmakers in the city corporation areas can take up projects equivalent to Tk5 crore every year.
Lawmakers outside the city corporation areas are already being given Tk20 crore for certain projects in their constituencies, Khandker Mosharraf Hossain, LGRD Minister, told parliament responding to a question.
“I had a discussion with the LGED officials. Very soon they (MPs of the city corporation areas) will be able to take projects like that of lawmakers outside the city corporations,” he added.
Currently, MPs, except those of the city corporation areas, will get Tk20 crore each for the development of rural infrastructure in their constituencies under the “Priority Based Important Rural Infrastructure Development Project-2”.
But the MPs themselves will not be able to spend the allotted money directly. They will send lists of development works intended to be taken up in their constituencies to the LGRD Ministry.
The Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) will implement the Tk6,076-crore project as per the lists.
During the five-year period of the project, a total of 284 MPS will get Tk4 crore each year.
However, 16 MPs from the city corporation areas and the reserved seats for women will not get any money from the project for now.
According to the project proposal, development work will be carried out for 465-km road in upazilas, 1,430-km road in unions, 6,173-km road in villages, 16,000-meter bridges and culverts, 111 rural markets and 64 river ghats (landing stations).
