2 defamation suits filed against Mahfuz Anam

Update : 09 Feb 2016, 07:46 PM

Two defamation cases have been filed against Mahfuz Anam, the editor of the Daily Star, for running “false corruption stories” against Sheikh Hasina based on information provided by the DGFI during the 2007-08 military-backed interim government’s regime.

The cases were filed in Khulna and Lakshmipur yesterday, two days after several MPS demanded legal action against the editor.

Mahfuz on a television talk show last week admitted that he had made a “big mistake” by running those stories.

Our Khulna correspondent reports that Mushfiqur Rahman, general secretary of Chhatra League’s local unit, filed a Tk1-crore defamation suit against Mahfuz with a local court.

Our Lakshmipur correspondent reports that Chhatra League’s Lakshmipur district unit President Chowdhury Mahmudunnabi Sohel filed the other case, seeking Tk50 crore in compensation for defaming Sheikh Hasina, the symbolic head of the organisation.
