Tea-seller's death: Probe report accuses 4 cops

Police have accused four of its members for the death of Mirpur tea stall owner Babul Matubbor, who was assaulted by policemen and later died of his injuries.

The investigation committee led by Deputy Commissioner (Discipline) Tutul Chakrabarti submitted the report to the DMP commissioner on Sunday afternoon.

Maruf Hossain Sarder, deputy commission (media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DPM) told the Dhaka Tribune that the four were found guilty for negligence in performing their duties properly.

The accused police members are -- SI Mominur Rahman, SI Niaz Uddin Mollah, ASI Jogendranath and Constable Jasim Uddin. The four were closed to the police lines on charge of assaulting Babul after he died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on February 4.

On the other hand, Additional Deputy Commissioner Masud Ahmed withdrew his report and sought two days more for reviewing it.

Babul received severe burns when a team of Shah Ali police allegedly attacked him on February 3, causing an oil spill from his stove.

He was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital immediately after the incident happened on Wednesday night.

Family members alleged that the police members attacked Babul as he refused to pay them extortions.

On the other hand, the police members claimed that the deceased was a drug dealer and he received the burns while trying to run away from the law enforcers.
