Bangladesh prisons go digital

A computerised database of all inmates in the country's 68 prisons has been launched.

Primarily, online fibre optical lines have been connected in 48 prisons across the country. The existing prisons will get the server connection in phases.

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal launched the official website of Bangladesh jail at RAB headquarters in Uttara on Sunday morning.

Financed by RAB, TigerIT Bangladesh developed the database. The RAB headquarters will control the system in association of prison directorate.

RAB Director General Benazir Ahmed, IG Prisons Brig Gen Sayed Iftekhar Uddin, DGFI Director General Mohammed Akbar Hossain, director generals of National Security Intelligence and Passport Department were present at the programme.

Addressing the vent, IG Prisons Brig Gen Sayed Iftekhar Uddin said: "Earlier, law enforcers mistakenly produced one inmate instead of another before the court. From now on, this will not happen further."

He also said the family members now can meet the prisoners through filling online application.
