Family members of a leader of Sechchhasebak League, a front organisation of the ruling party, alleged that police were implicating the leader in an arms case to keep him away from the race of the upcoming union parishad election.
Family of Shahdat Hossain Saju, vice-president of Fatickchari upazila unit Swechchhasebak League, made the allegation at a press conference held at conference Hall of Chittagong Metropolitan Union of Journalists in the morning.
Police said a team of police from Bhujpur police station recovered a firearm from the house of Shahdat Hossain on January 28.
Currently, the case is being investigated by Sub-Inspector of Bhujpur police station Md Baten.
Rojina Akhtar, wife of the leader, read out a written speech at the press conference.
She said: “My husband is not an armed terrorist and all of my father-in-law’s family members have been engaging with Awami League politics since the last 30 years in Fatickchari upazila. My father-in-law was the president of Baganbazar union Awami League for last 30 years.
“Though Saju’s family does not believe in armed politics, our rival UP chairman Rustam Ali is trying to implicate my husband in a false arms case and SI Baten is assisting him in exchange of a good amount of money.”
Saju’s wife also said SI Baten was harassing their family specially the female members in the name of the investigation.
“We also want a fair probe into the case, but it is very regretful that a police personnel was trying to tarnish image of a family which is loyal to the Awami League.”
Saju’s brothers – Amjad Sarkar, Alamgir Sarkar – and Swechchhasebak League leaders – Md Mahbub, Md Karim, MA Hashem – were present.
Officer-in-Charge of Bhujpur police station (OC) Jahidul Kabir told the Dhaka Tribune that he was not informed about the matter. He also advised the correspondent to talk with the SI Baten.
