Shah Ali OC withdrawn over death of tea-seller

Shah Ali police station Officer-in-Charge AKM Shahin Mondol has been withdrawn over the death of Mirpur tea stall owner who was severely burnt in an alleged police assault.

Maruf Hossain Sarder, deputy commission (media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, confirmed to the Dhaka Tribune about the withdrawal of the OC.

On Thursday, the authorities withdrew Sub-Inspector Shreedham Chandra Halder, SI Mominur Rahman, SI Niaz Uddin Mollah, Assistant Sub-Inspector Jogendranath and constable Jashim Uddin. Two probe bodies have also been formed over the matter.

The tea-seller, Babul Matabbor, succumbed to his injuries on Thursday afternoon.

He received 90% burns when a team of patrol police allegedly attacked him, causing an oil spill from his stove on Wednesday night.

He was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital immediately after the incident happened on Wednesday night.

Later, he was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) around 1:30pm Thursday.

Family members alleged that the police members attacked Babul as he refused to pay them toll.

On the other hand, the police members claimed that the deceased was a drug dealer and he received the burns while trying to run away from the law enforcers.
