Joy wants editor Mahfuz Anam behind bars

Update : 05 Feb 2016, 05:04 AM

The Prime Minister's ICT Adviser Sajeeb Wazed Joy has demanded that Daily Star Editor Mahfuz Anam be arrested for running "false corruptions [sic] stories against [his] mother Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina."

Joy made the demand in a statement on his Facebook page posted early Friday.

Joy said: "The editor of a major newspaper running a false smear campaign to assist in a military coup is treason."

"His false stories led to my mother’s arrest and spending 11 months in jail. I demand justice. I want Mahfuz Anam behind bars and on trial for treason," he wrote.

The prime minister's son also said that Mahfuz Anam did this in an attempt to remove his mother from politics.

"He is constantly writing against politicians as being unethical and corrupt. By his own admission he is completely unethical and a liar. He certainly has no right to remain a journalist, let alone an editor. His activities went beyond just being corrupt. They were unpatriotic and anti-Bangladesh," Joy said on his Facebook post.

Mahfuz Anam on a TV talk show on Wednesday admitted that he made a "big mistake" by running "corruption" stories based on information provided by the DGFI during the 2007-2008 caretaker regime.

"I admit it. It was a big mistake as an editor, in my journalism career,” Anam said on the talk show.
