Bablu's nephew Jahirul Islam earlier told the Dhaka Tribune that several policemen came to his uncle's shop and demanded extortion. When Bablu refused, one of them beat him up with a stick.

At one point of the assault, another policeman kicked a stove in the stall and a hot-water-filled kettle landed on Bablu, causing him severe burns.

The victim was brought to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital's burn unit around 11:45pm. Doctors said 95% of his body has suffered burns.

Sentu Chandra Das, assistant sub-inspector at DMCH outpost, said the police station concerned has been notified.
