Exemplary punishment and cancellation of parliament membership was demanded to ruling Awami League lawmaker MA Latif for distorting the image of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
The demand came from a protest rally yesterday at Central Shaheed Minar in the city.
Jagrata Chhatra O Juba Janata organised the protest rally with participation of leaders and activists of Bangladesh Awami League, Bangladesh Chhatra League, Jubo League, Sechchasebak League and Bangladesh Chhatra Moitree.
With ASM Jahid, secretary of Chittagong chapter Khelaghor in the chair, the protest rally was addressed by BCL leader Rajib Hasan Badal, former BCL president of Chittagong city MR Ajim, former BCL leader Nasir Haider Babul, BCL Chittagong city president Imran Ahmed Imu, AL leader Sharfuddin Chowdhury, Jubo League leader Mahbubul Haque Sumon, Chittagong city BCL leader Arafat Rubel and Sampad Roy, secretary of Chittagong City Bangladesh Chhatra Moitree, among others.Terming MA Latif a ‘Trojan horse’ in Awami League, the speakers at the rally said the nation would never brook such defamation of the Father of the Nation.
“We hate those people who persuaded the party leaders for making MA Latif a lawmaker on ruling party ticket. We also demand for declaring MA Latif MP persona non grata in Chittagong. We also demand cancellation of his parliament membership for defaming the founding father,” said Pankaj Roy, a leader of Chittagong city Sechchasebak League.
“MA Latif is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. MA Latif used Awami League for his personal interest. MA Latif is an agent of Jamaat-Shibir who was never associated with Awami League. He managed to win party’s favour in the parliament election in 2008 and then became a lawmaker. The image of the Awami League is in jeopardy due to MA Latif MP as he put the ruling party in embarrassing situation on several occasions by his activities,” said Imran Ahmed Imu, president of BCL Chittagong city.
The rally was followed by a protest procession which paraded the city.
During the rally the protesters also spat and kicked in the image of MA Latif MP.
It may be mentioned that Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s image on billboards installed in Chittagong by ruling Awami League lawmaker MA Latif during the recent visit of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to the premier port city on January 30 of this year.
The billboards showed a photograph of the Father of the Nation. However, the posture, attire and shoes did not match with Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
