Bangladesh unhappy over harassment of its official

Bangladesh has strongly protested the harassment of a Bangladeshi official in Islamabad and dubious activities of Pakistan High Commission in Dhaka.

Pakistan High Commissioner to Dhaka Shuja Alam was summoned Tuesday and handed over a note verbale protesting the incidents.

Acting Foreign Secretary Khurshed Alam and Secretary [Bilateral] Mizanur Rahman had an hour long meeting with the Pakistan envoy and expressed their displeasure.

A Bangladeshi official at the Bangladesh High Commission in Pakistan Jahangir Hossain was forcefully taken by plainclothesmen and detained for about seven hours.

The incident one and half hours after a Pakistani official of Pakistan High Commission Abrar Ahmed Khan in Dhaka was released from police custody. He was detained by Detective Branch for his dubious activities.

Abrar was released in the Monday evening and the high commission issued the press release at 9 o’clock in the evening.

A foreign ministry official said Bangladesh was unhappy on two counts.

The Pakistan high commissioner informed the foreign ministry about the detention of his staff and he was assured that Abrar would be released, he said.

Eventually, after the intervention of the foreign ministry he was released, but to their surprise the high commission issued a press statement late at night.

On the other hand, a Bangladeshi diplomat was harassed by some plainclothesmen in Islamabad.

Acting Foreign Secretary Khurshed and Secretary [Bilateral] Mizan told the Pakistan envoy that he was assured by the foreign ministry and even then why the high commission issued the press release, the official said adding he was also asked why the Bangladeshi staff in Islamabad was harassed.

The top foreign ministry officials at the beginning briefed the envoy why Abrar was detained and then sought explanation from him about the press release and harassment, he said.

After the meeting Shuja Alam told the journalists that he was briefed about the incident in Islamabad and he would find out what had happened.
