Bangladesh Facebook users get access to video, voice calls

Update : 30 Jan 2016, 06:59 PM

Facebook introduced video and voice calling through its Messenger apps on last Thursday in Bangladesh.

Not only in Bangladesh, video and voice calls through the Facebook apps were also introduced in several countries.

Facebook said more countries will come under the system within the next few months.

Bangladesh Facebook users have already started talking to their friends and relatives in home and abroad since the video and voice call services were commenced on Thursday.

Sazzad Hossain, a resident in Dhanmondi, told the Dhaka Tribune that on Friday morning he got a notification from Facebook to update his apps.

“I got the option to launch my video call after updating the apps. I gave a call to my friends and also my sister in London to make sure that the new offer works,” said Sazzad.

The goal of Facebook is to help users communicate face-to-face no matter where they are or what mobile connection they have, said telecom experts.

Video calling is available on devices using Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android mobile operating systems in Belgium, Canada, Croatia, Denmark, France, Greece, Ireland, Laos, Lithuania, Mexico, Nigeria, Norway, Oman, Poland, Portugal, the United Kingdom, the United States and Uruguay.

The company seeks to transform its mobile messaging service into a full-featured platform with the same reach as its 1.4 billion user social network, reports Reuters.

Earlier this year, Messenger launched voice and video calling between computers. Messenger competes with Microsoft Corp’s Skype, Apple Inc’s FaceTime and Google Inc’s Hangouts, all of which allow video calls between mobile devices or computers.

Messenger, with more than 600 million users, now have a video icon at the top right corner of its screen.

At Facebook’s annual developer conference in March, Chief Executive Mark Zuckerburg said the social network would introduce myriad features within Messenger.

Facebook also unveiled a platform that enables developers to easily create apps that function within Messenger.
