Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque has ordered members of the police force not to harass the citizens by misusing the existing laws.
He made the statement at the IGP badge and prize giving ceremony in Rajarbagh Police Line in the capital yesterday afternoon.
The IGP presented 193 police officials with the IGP badge at the event, a part of the Police Week 2016.
Speaking to journalists, the IGP termed the police force as public servants and said the force had already started providing people-oriented service.
He ordered the field-level police officials to be friendly with people and ensure good communication with them.
In case of any trouble, he advised police to have discussions with civilians in order to resolve them.
Shahidul also said terrorism and illegal drug business were the largest challenges for police and the force was working their best to stop terrorists and drug dealers.
The police chief said legal action would be taken against the peddlers regardless of who they are.
He urged everyone to work together to combat terrorism and said without being aware of how terrorism is spreading, it would be difficult to remove terrorists from the country.
