DU students submit memo on metro rail

Update : 28 Jan 2016, 08:23 PM

Students of Dhaka University has submitted a memorandum to Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique demanding change of the proposed metro rail route, planned to be built through the DU campus.

Student representatives handed the memorandum to the VC at his office around 12:20pm yesterday.

Coming back from the VC’s office, the student leaders said the VC had expressed dissatisfaction with their demand and urged them to go to the higher authorities in this regard.

“The VC disagrees with us on our demand,” the students said.

The protesting students also announced that they would go to the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges to submit a memorandum on February 2 or 3.

They also called upon their rival group of DU students who approve of the metro rail route through the campus to have an open discussion in front of Raju Bhaskarja on the campus on Saturday.

Earlier, the students gathered near Raju Bhaskarja and chanted the slogan: “We are not against the development of our country, only demanding a change of the metro rail route.”

Urging the authorities concerned to design an alternative route through Ramna and Matsya Bhaban area, the protesting students said building the metro rail route through the campus would hamper the attraction of historic monuments on the campus, including the Raju Bhaskarja, be disrespectful to the memorials and graves of the three leaders and the Dhaka Gate, and cause sound pollution on the campus.

Students have been protesting against the current plan of metro rail route since January 7.
