Strategy: celebrity RJ

Update : 28 Jan 2016, 06:39 PM

They are bold, they are energetic, they are young. Yes, we are talking about young celebrities. Nowadays celebrities are multi-talented, taking a lot on their plates. As far as the world of media is concerned, they try their hand at everything from modelling, acting, singing and dancing - giving them a truly  multidimensional career. Today, we talk about those celebrities who’ve looked out of their comfort zones and delved into radiojockeying, talking to their audiences live, directly through FM stations.

In Bangladesh FM channels are now popular across the country with more and more people feeling engaged with the shows. They send text messages, they call the RJ’s live number and even follow them on social media. As a result, a few FM channels have come up with the idea where well known celebrities take up the position of RJ’s themselves.

As Neerob and Kibria became popular RJ’s, Radio Foorti introduced Sharmin Lucky as an RJ as well. By then, she was already riding the fame of being a famous cooking show host and model. Radio Foorti continued the trend and introduced Fual-Al-Muqhtadir and Bass Baba Shumon. As of now they’ve got Elita regularly hosting one of their shows.

Tahsan Khan, a teen favourite is also hosting the same FM.52 where he discusses and shares his feelings on current topics. Tahsan has claimed that audiences will be able to see another dimension of him via the show.

Hridoy Khan, too, is part of a weekly radio show called “The HK Show” for ABC Radio 89.2FM. Lyricist Shahan Kabondho has followed suit and is doing a show called “Listen Limitless” on Dhaka FM 90.4. Singer Shahed and Saif, the man behind Dreek’s vocals is also engaged with different shows on different FM channels.

An FM official informs that measures such as these help attract more listeners to each station, making it a top reason to include celebrities in their list of RJ’s.

It seems like the audiences feel the same way too. Anika, a Medical College student from Dhanmondi says, “I am a big fan of Tahsan. That’s why I never forget to tune in to the show.”

While finding musician-turned RJ’s are more commonplace, other kinds of celebrities are also showing interest in joining FM channels. Recently all rounder Bangladeshi Cricketer Shakib Al Hasan signed a contract with Radio Dhoni 91.2 FM as the “Face of Radio Dhoni.”

In an ever blossoming industry like this one, these steps have surely given listeners another reason to tune into radio stations. While on the other end, celebrities, too, feel that this adds to their portfolio and broadens their scope of work immensely, allowing them to connect with listeners on a more personal level.
