State Minister for Posts and Telecommunications Tarana Halim has warned retailers that the government will cancel their licences if they fail to carry out the biometric registration of SIM and RIUM buyers.
The junior minister on Thursday cautioned retailers against taking payments to re-register existing SIMs and RIUMs.
She demanded that the SIM registration process be completed by April. “After that all unregistered SIMs will be blocked.”
Tarana disclosed the government's tough stance on the issue following a meeting with the CEOs of all of the mobile operators at the Secretariat.
The government launched the mandatory biometric SIM/RIUM registration system on December 16, 2015.
The push to enforce the biometric registration process will not affect the big Telcos directly, but will have an impact on their extensive sales and distribution networks.
