Update : 27 Jan 2016, 07:40 PM

Bangladesh will start importing 100 megawatt electricity from Tripura of India by February, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid has told the parliament.

Replying to a query yesterday, the state minister said Bangladesh was currently importing 500MW of power from India.

Nasrul said it would be possible to start importing an additional 500MW electricity from India through Bahrampur-Bheramara point by July 2018.

The government has set a target to import 15% electricity against the country’s total demand. Bangladesh is being benefited by importing electricity at comparatively cheaper prices, he added.

In reply to another query, the state minister said as many as 22,201 villages are already fully under electricity coverage across the country, while 55,496 other villages are being brought under power coverage in phases.

There are some 13.6 million clients of Palli Bidyut Samity across the country, Nasrul said.
