PM: There is gas crisis despite efforts

Update : 27 Jan 2016, 04:20 PM

Despite government's initiatives, there is some gas crisis in this winter season, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said.

“There is some crisis of gas. I admit that there are some problems. But we are trying hard to mitigate the crisis,” she said in reply to a supplementary question during the premier’s question-answer session in Jatiya Sangshad on Wednesday.

During winter, natural gas gets concentrated resulting in slow flow of gas in this season, she said.

“That is why, you see the gas crisis during winter,” she said.

“We are increasing the production of gas, but the demand for gas is increasing significantly as development activities are also expanding significantly.”

The leader of the house said the government has decided to import liquefied natural gas (LNG) as alternative.

She also said that the LNG terminal is under construction. Once it is completed, it would be possible to import gas.

The government has strengthened BAPEX and gas exploration activities are being taken forward with this organisation.

Regarding household gas usage, Sheikh Hasina said the government had waived the tax on liquid petroleum gas (LPG) to attract more investors in this sector.
