Bangladesh to import 100MW electricity from Tripura

Bangladesh will start importing 100 megawatt of electricity from Tripura of India by February next, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid has said.

He was replying to a question in the parliament on Wednesday.

The state minister also said Bangladesh is now importing 500 megawatt of power from India.

It will be possible to start importing more 500 megawatt of electricity from India through Bahrampur-Bheramara point by July 2018, he said.

The government has set a target to import 15% electricity against the country’s total demand, he added.

He told the House that Bangladesh is being benefited importing electricity from India at comparatively cheaper prices.

In replying to another query, the state minister said as many as 22,201 villages have already come under full electricity coverage across the country while more 55,496 villages are being brought under power coverage in phases.

Responding to a starred question, the junior minister said legal actions were taken against some 400 officials and employees of the power sectors in the last five years for their involvement in illegal activities.
