Bangladesh supports Chinese ‘one belt one corridor’ initiative

Update : 26 Jan 2016, 04:27 PM

Bangladesh has found ‘one belt one corridor’ initiative innovative and pragmatic and the government is very much onboard with the initiative.

This was disclosed by Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque at a seminar on ‘Bangladesh-China Relations: 40 Years of Partnership’ in Dhaka.

Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies organised the seminar to mark the 40 years anniversary of establishing bilateral relationship.

Four former Chinese ambassadors to Bangladesh came to Dhaka to attend the seminars.

About Bangladesh’ benefit from the one belt initiative, the foreign secretary said: “I can assure you, we are not behind.”

He said Bangladesh, China, India and Myanmar [BCIM] discussed how BCIM can be linked with the one belt initiative.

About the progress in the BCIM, he said Bangladesh, India and China have already prepared their country reports but Myanmar is yet to do that.

Bangladesh and China have already shared their papers with each other and hopefully it would be discussed in the third BCIM joint study group of meeting in India, he added.

Connectivity, trade and investment, and technology are three broader areas where Bangladesh and China can increase their cooperation.

He, however, said climate change and terrorism and violent extremism can have negative impact on any bilateral relationship.
