5 envoys brief MOFA about Iran embargo lifting

Update : 26 Jan 2016, 04:10 PM

Iranian Ambassador to Bangladesh Abbas Vaezi has briefed Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque about lifting of sanction on Tehran.

In the meeting, the Iranian ambassador said the sanction had been lifted and now there is no problem in doing business and maintain normal relationship with any country, said a foreign ministry official.

The United States and European Union lifted sanction on Iran on January 16 after negotiating with Tehran for over a decade.

The official said the Iranian ambassador did not make any comment on warm relationship between Bangladesh and Saudi Arabia.

“Iran is a matured country and it understands the reality of Bangladesh,” he said.

Iran and Saudi Arabia have difference of opinion on number of issues in the Middle East and both the countries closed down their embassies in each other country recently.

Bangladesh also issued a press statement condemning attack on Saudi embassy in Iran.

About two million Bangladeshis are residing in Saudi Arabia doing various works.

Envoys of European Union, France, Germany and United Kingdom had a schedule meeting with the foreign secretary on the same issue after the meeting of the Iranian ambassador, but due to an unscheduled meeting, the secretary could not meet them.

Another official of the foreign ministry said the meeting was scheduled but the secretary was busy in another meeting elsewhere.

The envoys had the meeting with Secretary [Bilateral] Mizanur Rahman and explained their position about the lifting of embargo on Iran, he said.

The EU and Iran had a meeting this month and the EU countries are disseminating the decisions of the meeting, he said.

Meanwhile, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has started a visit to Italy and France for attracting investment and business for his country.

Iran has already signed $18 billion investment deals with Italian companies. Few days back Iran and China signed $600 billion deals on various sectors.
