Specialised anti-terrorism unit in the offing

Update : 24 Jan 2016, 07:00 PM

Inspector General of Police AKM Shahidul Hoque admitted that his force lacked a specialised unit to combat terrorism in the country.

He said they were trying their best with the existing forces to maintain law and order. Still, some groups had conducted some scattered attacks last year. The IGP said that they were working to set up a specialised unit.

The police chief made the remarks at a press briefing arranged ahead of the Police Week 2016 at the Police Headquarters. Praising the police forces for their efforts, Shahidul said that the police, DB, Special Taskforce and other units were working jointly to fight against terrorist activities despite having limitations.

He claimed that all the cases filed over terrorist activities last year had been solved. “Some 70 cases were lodged with different police stations last year in which 235 suspects and accused were arrested.” The IGP, however, did not provide any statistics on the number of people got bail last year.

He also claimed that law and order scenario had been improving for the last three years. According to a US-based law and order monitoring organisation – Gallup Poll, Bangladesh ranks second among the South Asian countries after Sri Lanka. It says that the country’s law and order is better than the USA, France, Australia and India.
