The Cabinet has decided not to raise the retirement age of government employees who are Freedom Fighters.
Freedom Fighters (FFs) currently in government service have long been demanding an increase in the age of retirement to 65 years.
The decision to keep the retirement age at 60 years was taken at a regular cabinet meeting on Monday with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
Demands by FF government employees to raise the retirement age began in 2006. In 2010, the governemnt raised the retirement age from 57 to 59 years.
The retirement age for freedom fighters in government employment was raised again on February 26, 2013, from 59 to 60 years.
Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam, speaking to journalists after the meeting, said the Public Administration Ministry had placed a letter with the Prime Minister's Office regarding the service age extension according to the directives of the High Court and Appellate Division.
On November 16, 2015, the Supreme Court gave a directive that the issue be placed before Cabinet for a decision within 60 days.
The cabinet secretary said Cabinet's decision today was made within the specified timeframe, after receiving a certified copy of the court order on November 24, 2015.
