Railway plans fare hike by 7.8%

Update : 14 Jan 2016, 09:09 AM

The Railways Ministry has recommended raising train fare by 7.8% with effect from February.

Addressing a press briefing at Railway Bhaban in the capital on Thursday, Railways Minister Mazibul Hoque said train fares will be raised from February, depending on approval by the prime minister.

He said: "A proposal regarding the fare hike has been sent to the prime minister. The train fare will be hiked after receiving the premier's approval."

In response to a query, Mazibul said train fares would increase by 7.8%.

"The hike will be a minimum of Tk5 and a maximum of Tk45.We are increasing fares to improve the standard of passenger service. From now on, train fares will be hiked every year," he added.

Bangladesh Railway makes losses of Tk900 crore every year. "It will be possible to minimise the loss at least Tk100 crore by raising fares."

The last time train fares were revised was in June 2012 – that, too, after 20 years.
