Erotic romance drama Fifty Shades of Grey and action-comedy Pixels are leading with six nominations each at the 36th annual Razzie Awards, an award ceremony celebrating the worst productions in Hollywood every year.
Stars who have landed in the worst performers’ list include some of the biggest names in Hollywood such as Johnny Depp, Mila Kunis, Oscar-winners Gwyneth Paltrow and Eddie Redmayne.
Golden Raspberry Foundation, the organisers of the ceremony announced the nominations yesterday.
Fifty Shades of Grey, an adaptation of EL James’ 2011 novel of the same name, will compete with Pixels, Fantastic Four, Jupiter Ascending, and Paul Blart Mall Cop 2 for the title Worst Picture of the Year at the Razzies.
Fifty Shades lead stars Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson, who portrayed the role of Christian Gray and Anastasia Steele, are also nominated in the worst actor and actress categories besides the worst screen combo.
Helmer Sam Taylor-Johnson, who is not directing the film’s sequel, is nominated for the worst director apart from Kelly Marcel for worst screenplay. Sandler, who often finds himself in the list of Razzies, has landed there once again for two of his movies, Pixels and The Cobbler.
Giving him company in the worst actor category are Depp (Mortdecai), Sandler’s Pixels co-star Kevin James (Paul Blart Mall Cop 2), Channing Tatum (Jupiter Ascending) and Dornan.
Box office dud Fantastic Four has five nominations including the worst remake or sequel, worst screen combo for Kate Mara and Jamie Bell and worst director for Josh Trank. Katherine Heigl (Home Sweet Hell), Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey), Kunis (Jupiter Ascending), Jennifer Lopez (The Boy Next Door) and Paltrow (Mortdecai) are nominated for the worst actress title.
The other categories in which Hollywood movies have been nominated include worst remake or sequel, worst screen combo, worst director, worst screenplay besides the Razzies Redeemer Award for Elizabeth Banks, M Night Shyamalan, Will Smith and Sylvester Stallone.
The winners of Razzies, also known as Golden Raspberry Awards, will be announced on February 27, the night before the 88th annual Academy Awards.
Initiated in 1980, Razzies recognises the worst movie of the year with a trophy with gold sprayed on it. The trophy costs $4.97. The winners are selected by a 900-member Razzie committee through online voting. Anyone can vote after becoming a member by paying $40.
