Update : 12 Jan 2016, 02:27 PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in her address to the nation has thanked people for ensuring triumph of democracy over the violence and terrorism that BNP-Jamaat unleashed in order to destroy the country's development

In the televised speech marking her government's second anniversary of this tenure, she highlighted her government's sector-wise successes.

Sheikh Hasina said the government has fulfilled the electoral pledges and the development works are underway.

Thanking the people for raising protest against the violent arson campaign of BNP and its ally Jamaat-e-Islam, the prime minister said the trial is undertaken, and the perpetrators must be punished who killed scores of people and injured hundreds by burning alive.

She said BNP-Jamaat can't tolerate democracy.

“But people didn't support the terrorist activities of BNP and Jamaat,” she observed.

In her speech, the PM cited her government's economic achievement, saying we took office amid worldwide economic slump; however, we managed to accelerate country growth over 6%.

She also expressed her hope that the GDP would exceed 7% soon.

Among her other achievements, she mentioned the recognition of third gender, the increase of average life expectancy.

She said the country will get the Padma Bridge in use in 2018; every house will get electricity by 2021.

Bangladesh is set to send Bangabandhu Satellite 1 in 2016, she also said.

In her speech, Hasina slammed Khaleda Zia for disrespecting the martyrs of the Liberation War, saying her government wouldn't stand with such derogation.

The PM sought cooperation of the people to take the country to its projected goal and reach the collective dream.
