Re-polling going on in 20 municipalities

Re-elections at a total of 51 polling stations under 20 municipalities have been going on peacefully.

No violent incident was reported as of filing this report at 1:15pm on Tuesday.

The voting started at 8am and it will continue till 4pm without break.

During the December 30 municipal election, voting at 12 polling centres of Madhabdi Municipality in Narsingdi district was suspended for violence and vote rigging.

Four mayoral candidates were on the race where a total of 27,706 voters will exercise their franchise.

EC Assistant Secretary Razib Ahsan said: “In those municipalities re-polls will be held to elect seven mayors and 72 general councillors.”

The EC also decided to deploy additional law enforcers to stop violence and irregularities.

Some 51 executive magistrates hav been deployed in the polling centres so that they can take immediate action against the miscreants.

Two voting centres - Narikelbari Government Primary School and Madinatul Ulum Dakhil Madrasa - in Kurigram’s Ulipur sees re-polls today.

Besides, the municipal elections in Singair of Manikganj district is scheduled to be held today as well.
