Land minister’s son among nine killed in road crashes

At least nine people including the son of Land Minister Shamsur Rahman, were killed and 51 injured in separate road accidents in Tangail, Chuadanga, Joypurhat and Pabna yesterday.

In Tangail, seven people, including Land Minister Shamsur Rahman Sherif’s son Rana Sherif, 33, were killed and 45 others injured in separate road crashes amid dense fog on the eastern side of Bangabandhu Bridge in Bhuapur upazila.

Akheruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Bangabandhu Bridge East police station, said the accidents took place in separate points close to pillar no 25 and pillar no 40 of the bridge, leaving seven people dead and 45 others injured in the early hours of the day.

In the first incident, a bus of Sarkar Paribahan dashed the rear of a cattle-laden truck around 7 am, leaving four people dead on the spot and 13 others injured.

Later, within short while, a northern region-bound truck from Dhaka hit a truck from behind and a number of vehicles, including a truck, a police vehicle, a private car, a bus and an ambulance, banged on the truck, leaving one dead on the spot and 34 others injured, said the OC.

The injured were rushed to Sirajganj General Hospital, Tangail General Hospital and several clinics.

Of the injured, one unidentified person died on way to hospital while Rana Sharif died at Tangail hospital.

The accidents occurred due to low visibility caused by dense fog, said the OC.

Traffic movement on the bridge which was suspended in the morning following the accidents resumed around 3pm.

In Chuadanga, three people were killed and nine others injured in a head-on collision between two buses at Joyrampur in Darshana upazila in the morning.

The deceased were identified as the drivers of the two buses – Shanti Miah and Dulal Mandol - and a passenger Aras Miah.

Police and locals a Darshana-bound bus from Chuadanga collided head-on with another bus coming from the opposite direction around 8am, leaving the two drivers dead on the spot and 10 others injured.

Of the injured, Aras Miah died on way to Chuadanga Sadar Hospital. The rest of injured people were being treated at the hospital.

Liakat Hossain, inspector of Damurhuda Model police station, confirmed the incident.

In Joypurhat, A motorcyclist was killed and another injured as a motorcycle dashed a roadside tree on Akkelpur-Jamalganj road in Awalgari area of Akkelpur upazila in the morning.

The deceased was identified as Belal Hossain, 42, son of Habij Mondal, hailing from Deogram village in Khetlal upazila.

Hospital sources said the accident took place in the area around 8:30am when the motorcyclist dashed a roadside tree losing control over its wheel, leaving Belal dead on the spot and his co-passengers Jahirul Islam critically injured.

The injured was admitted to Akkelpur Upazila Health Complex.

In Pabna, A young man was killed and five others including three policemen were injured in separate road accidents in Sadar and Sujanagar upazilas in the morning.

In Sadar upazila, a van passenger was killed and two others injured when a truck hit the van on Pabna-Eshwardi highway in Monohorpur village around 9am, said Abdullah Al-Hasan, officer-in-charge of Sadar police station.

The deceased was identified as Sweet, 22, son of Akmal of the village.

Meanwhile, three policemen were injured as a bus hit a police van in front of Akij Jute Mill at Ataikula around 9am, said Golam Rasul, inspector of Sujanagar police station.

The injured were Al Mahmud, Abdus Sabur and Ruhul Amin.
