A Jubo League leader was killed in a clash between two groups of transport workers in Bogra’s Santahar yesterday noon.
Shafiqul Islam, general secretary of Jubo League’s Santahar union unit, died after he was hacked with sharp weapons.
At least 10 others were also injured in the clash that broke out in CSD Gate area between CNG-run autorickshaw and battery-run easy bike workers in the wake of a longstanding turf war. The injured were sent to different hospitals.
Angry autorickshaw workers vandalised the house of Jatiya Party’s Adamdighi upazila unit General Secretary Ferdous Hasan Sumon, who is also the president of the local easy bike owners association.
They also unleashed vandalism at 10 spots, including the business of NHM Milon, president of the upazila unit of Jatiya Party, and lit fire.
The autorickshaw workers later resisted firefighters, who came from Naogaon to douse the flame.
Panic spread in the area soon after the clash erupted and store owners closed their shops to avoid damage. Police fired rubber bullets and teargas shells to bring the situation under control.
Members of the local CNG owners-workers association blocked the Santahar-Bogra highway for nearly an hour. They lifted the blockade after police arrived there.
Additional police were deployed to avert further unrest and Jatiya Party’s Santahar municipality unit President Abdul Latif was detained.
Officer-in-Charge of Adamdighi police station Shawkat Kabir said in the evening the situation had calmed down and no case was lodged.
