Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal yesterday ordered the law enforcement agencies to take stern actions against any cases of violence during today’s hartal called by Jamaat.
“Jamaat can call hartal. But any programmes that does not have general people’s support are questionable. During today’s hartal, shops will remain open and transportation on the road will be as usual,” he said at a programme in Dhaka.
Yesterday, Jamaat-e-Islami called a countrywide dawn-to-dusk hartal for today after the Supreme Court Appellate Division upheld the death penalty given to the party’s chief Matiur Rahman Nizami by the war crimes tribunal.
“If anyone tries to prevent vehicles from plying the roads or vandalise or firebombs them, law enforcement agencies will do their due duty. Law enforcers and people with resist them [hartal supporters],” the minister said.
Calling upon owners to keep their shops open, Kamal said there was no reason to be afraid as authorities have taken all steps to prevent sabotage and bombing.
