Earthquake kills 6 in India

At least six people have been killed and 40 others injured in the earthquake that struck the north-east part of India.

The death toll is likely to increase, reports the NDTV.

According to the USGS, the epicentre of the 6.7 magnitude earthquake was monitored at 33km northwest of Imphal, the capital of Manipur state in the early hours of Monday.

The roofs and staircases of some buildings collapsed in the city of about 2,70,000 people.

"It was the biggest earthquake we've felt in Imphal," disaster response worker Kanarjit Kangujam told news agency Reuters by telephone.

According to the report, the power and telecoms links were down in the remote region.

Government officials leading the rescue effort could not immediately be reached for comment.

On the other hand, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted that he was in touch with authorities in the northeast.

Besides, the tremor was also felt in Bangladesh and Nepal.

Two people were killed and 32 others injured during the earthquake in Bangladesh.
