Make Dhaka liveable, DSCC mayor and RAB urge citizens

Update : 03 Jan 2016, 07:21 PM

The Dhaka South City Corporation mayor and the Rapid Action Battalion chief sought citizens’ assistance to make the capital neat and clean.

“A mayor and the city corporation cannot do it alone,” Mayor Mohammad Sayeed Khokon told a programme yesterday.

At the awareness programme, jointly organised by DSCC and RAB at Tikatuli, the elite force’s Director General Benazir Ahmed assured the mayor of all assistance.

On Saturday, Khokon, Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal and Bangladesh ODI captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza inaugurated year-long “Clean Dhaka 20Sixteen”.

“The citizens will have to act like a mayor and love his city to make it a success,” Khokon said.

Both Khokon and Benazir hinted at tough measures to realise the goal.

Benazir said: “Law is for the civilised people and its implementation is for criminals.

“And a livable city is a must for the civilised people.”

He said it would be “very easy” to make Dhaka clean if the citizens were conscious.

Khokon asked citizens to dispose garbage at designated sites at night.

He said he would go tough on transport leaders who did not pay heed to his call to remove vehicles at the Sayedabad bus and truck terminal.

The DSCC will start repairing 300 streets in Old Dhaka by mid-January, he added.

On December 23, Khokon said the DSCC would set up 57 waste transfer stations, modernise Matuail landfill, build 25 public toilets, remove illegal billboards, and free illegally occupied roads and footpaths.

The mayor said people with influence would not be able to hinder eviction drives. An order would be issued soon mandating plastering and colouring buildings within a certain period of time, he added.

“Think of the city as your home and make it livable,” Khokon said.
