Pro-liberation youths’ platform the Gonojagoron Mancha has rejected the verdict in blogger Rajeeb Haider murder case.
“We are not satisfied with the verdict in Rajeeb murder case; we are rejecting the verdict and we will continue movement against the verdict,” Imran H Sarker, spokesperson of the platform, told the Dhaka Tribune.
The platform will hold a protest rally at Shahbagh at 4pm on Thursday demanding the highest punishment of the killers, he said.
A speedy trial tribunal awarded death penalty to two persons in the case filed over the murder of secular blogger Ahmed Rajeeb Haider on Thursday.
The death row convicts are Foysal Bin Nayeem alias Dwip and Redwanul Azad Rana, who is absconding in the case. The court also fined them Tk10,000 each.
Besides, the court handed down life-term imprisonment to Mohammad Makshudul Hassan Anik and fined him Tk10,000. In default, he will have to suffer a year more in jail.
The court also sentenced Mohammad Ahsan Reza Rumman, Mafiz Imtiaz, Mohammad Nayem Shikdar Irad to 10 years in jail. They were fined Tk5,000. In default, they will have to serve six months in jail.
Meanwhile, the court awarded Mufti Jashim Uddin Rahamani five years in jail and fined him Tk2,000. In default, he will have to serve two months more.
Sadman Yasir Mahmud was jailed for three years and fined Tk2,000. In default, he will have to serve two months in jail.
Rajeeb, known as Thaba Baba to the blogging community, was hacked to death on February 15, 2013 near his Pallabi home, only 10 days into the historic movement at Shahbagh demanding the death penalty for the 1971 war criminals and a ban on Jamaat-e-Islami and its student body Islami Chhatra Shibir.
A day after the murder, the victim’s father Nazim Uddin filed a murder case with Pallabi police station.
