Vote rigging, clashes in Manikganj

Rampant vote rigging, clashes allegedly took places on Wednesday in the election at five polling centres under Manikganj Sadar municipality.

Sources said around 150 people led by Abu Bakkar Siddique Tusar, suspended Jubo League activist and also stalwart of State Minister for Health Zahid Malik, entered Shaheed Titumir Academy around 7:30am and started casting fake votes in favour of AL-backed mayor candidate Ramjan Ali.

Being informed, supporters of both AL rebel candidate Gazi Kamrul Huda Selim, suspended general secretary of the district unit AL, and BNP-backed mayor Nasir Uddin Ahmed Jadu rushed to the spot and tried to foil the illegal move.

At one stage, chase and counter-chase ensued there centring the incident.

Later, police moved away the chaotic people.

When contacted, Selim blamed Tusar for stamping fake votes and later he informed police and assigned magistrate of the incident.

Nasir echoed the voice of Selim.

Presiding Officer Md Mozammel Hoque denied the allegation of casting fake votes.

Sadar police station OC Aminur Rahman and Executive Magistrate Shahdat Hossain denied to make any comment.

Saiful Islam, 56, Sanjoy, 15, and Anisur Rrahman in Dasura area of Sadar upazila, admitted of casting fake votes.

In another incident, a clash was occured at Jagir High School polling station arpound 7:30am centring vote rigging.

Sramik League President Babul Sarker, stalwart of State Minister for Health Zahid Malik, led the incident.

However, presiding officer Md Rabiul Islam denied the allegation.

Another clash took place at Motto Government Primary Girl School polling station around 2:45pm.

Near about 132 votes were cast illegally, alleged AL rebel candidate Gazi Kamrul Huda Selim.

Local people also said Manikganj Sadar municipality AL vice president Abdus Salam, another stalwart of Mayor Candidate Ramjan Ali, led the incident.

Casting fake votes and clashes had been reported at Purra Model Government Primary School under Manikganj Sadar municipality.

Some 10-12 unruly men led by Jasim, Mehedi entered the polling centre around 2:30pm and started casting fake votes in favour of AL-backed mayor candidate Ramjan Ali.

Being informed, supporters of AL rebel candidate Gazi Kamrul Huda Selim, rushed to the spot and tried to foil the illegal move.

A chase and counter-chase incident took place during the time, leaving three-four people injured.

Later, police dispersed all of the infighting people.

Returning officer Gazi Mohammad Asaduzzaman Kabir said the election was held in peaceful environment.
