Vote counting underway

Update : 30 Dec 2015, 02:29 AM

Vote counting of the much hyped first ever partisan municipal polls held on Wednesday is underway.

Elections to 234 municipalities were held amid allegations of vote rigging, occupations of polling centres and sporadic clashes.

The voting started at 8am and ended at 4pm Wednesday.

At least 25 candidates including Awami League rebel candidates boycotted the elections bringing allegation of rigging by the ruling party men.

However, the ruling party has claimed the election was held in a free and fair manner and termed BNP's claim as baseless.

This election is the start of the country's maiden local government polls on partisan lines.

Geographically, the 234 municipalities that are seeing election today cover the entire of Bangladesh as each of the 64 districts have several municipalities under them.

But, the number of voters in these municipality areas is just a little over seven million, which is only about 7.5% of the total number of voters in the country.
