Cellphone recharge not over Tk500 per day

Update : 29 Dec 2015, 09:28 PM

In an effort to stop illegal overseas call through using VoIP, mobile phone subscribers have been barred from recharging more than Tk500 a day.

Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has come up with the disclosure through issuing a directive on Monday last. The directive was issued to all the mobile phone operators with immediate effect.

An official of the commission said: “The regulatory body has made the decision to put a cap on daily recharge amount against a single mobile phone number to prevent illegal overseas calls.”

If a subscriber recharges TK500 per day, after deducting 3% Supplementary Duty and 15% VAT, he or she ultimately would be able to enjoy the service of Tk422 a day, said business insiders.

It is noted here that mobile phone operators have a good number of bundle and Internet products, which are approved by BTRC, are costlier than the stipulated amount. As a result, the subscribers will ultimately be deprived of availing the said products. Moreover, it will also create sort of hassles to the subscribers, as they will have to recharge their number very frequently to avail those products.

“The commission has decreased the recharge amount instead of increasing it, changing the modality, which will ultimately stop our spirit for digitising Bangladesh,” said a businessman.
