Mobile recharge limited up to Tk500 a day

Update : 29 Dec 2015, 12:52 PM

A mobile phone subscriber will not be able to recharge a single mobile phone number with more than Tk500 in a day.

Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) on Monday has given the directive to all the mobile phone operators with immediate effect in this regard.

An official of the commission said the regulatory body has taken this decision to cap the daily recharge amount for a single mobile phone number in order to prevent illegal calls overseas.

Industry insiders said a subscriber recharges Tk500 per day, after deducting 3% SD and 15% VAT, subscriber ultimately be able to enjoy Tk422 worth product per day.

Mobile phone operators have a good numbers of bundle and Internet products, approved by BTRC, which are more than the above amount.

They also said confiding the recharge amount to Tk500 per day will ultimately deprive the subscriber to avail the said products. Moreover, it will create hassle to subscribers to recharge different days to avail those products.

But suddenly issuing this directive, the commission, instead of increasing the recharge amount, decreased it with changing modality, which will ultimately stop our spirit of digitising Bangladesh.

Everyday nearly 60 million minutes of international calls are made to and from Bangladesh. Around 30% calls are made through VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol).

In June this year, the country's top mobile operators Grameen Phone, Robi and Banglalink complained against the sole state-owned operator Teletalk to the telecommunication authorities, claiming that at least 25,000 Teletalk numbers are used in illegal VoIP business.
