Scores of people were injured in attacks and counter attacks between rival candidates’s supporters across the country yesterday.
In Noakhali, at least five people were injured in a clash between supporters of two rival candidates at Uskhali Bazar, Hatiya upazila in the morning.
Officer-in-Charge of Hatiya police station Nurul Huda said Deputy Commissioner of Noakhali had exchanged views with all candidates to maintain code and conduct of the election. After the meeting, all of a sudden supporters of Awami League candidate AKM Yousuf Ali and its rival candidate Advocate Saif Uddin locked into a clash in front of the upazila complex that left five people injured. On information, police went to the spot and took the situation under control.
In Bhola, the incumbent councillor of ward 3 of Bhola sadar municipality came under attack by some miscreants in Gazipur road area yesterday morning.
The counclillor Md Humayun Kabir, joint secretary of district unit of BNP, was admitted to Bhola Sadar Hospital.
Humayun Kabir told the Dhaka Tribune that he was conducting election campaign in favour of his wife Nahida Akter Luna who was contesting as councillor for a reserved seat comprising ward 1, 2, 3, then supporters of her rival candidate Josna Yesmin attacked them suddenly. Officer-in-Charge of Bhola Sadar police station said no case was filed in this connection. He said he would into the matter.
Vice-president of BNP central committee Hafiz Uddin Ahmed (Bir Bikrom) condemned the attack. He demanded intervention law enforcement agencies in this regard.
Meanwhile, several bombs were exploded at Rupur, Dakbanglamor, Kandapara, Sherkhali and Doriapur of Sirajganj in the early hours of yesterday. At least five activists of the BNP were injured in these bomb blasts.
Moreover, BNP councillor and mayoral candidates brought allegations against district returning officer for not taking action against ruling party candidates for violating electoral code of conduct.
Officer-in-Charge of Shahjadpur police station told the Dhaka Tribune that he was not aware of the bomb blasts.
Deputy Captain of BGB 14 Major Iqbal Akhter said six platoon of BGB would be deployed across the country to make the election free and fair at six municipalities in the district.
In Trishal, three people were injured as supporters of Awami League nominated mayoral candidate and rival candidate clashed at Doriarampur on the Dhaka-Mymensigh Highway.
Officer-in-Charge of Doriarampur police station Md Moniruzzaman said additional police had been deployed in the locality to avoid further clash.
