The ready-made garment sector in the country is taking the brunt of non-cooperation of Civil Aviation Authority, Bangladesh (CAAB), Biman Bangladesh Airlines and Customs Intelligence as the manufacturers fail to get the delivery of their imported raw materials in time, BGMEA President Siddiqur Rahman has said.
Siddiqur came up with the allegation at a media briefing at his office yesterday.
RMG manufactures have to import raw materials on an emergency basis spending a lot of money, but they did not get their products in due time.
He cited lack of cooperation among the three organisations.
They should taken the decision how they will deliver goods in due time as the importers have to suffer a huge loss in the wake of delay shipment, said the BGMEA boss.
“Biman is supposed to deliver products within 24 hours but we did not get it even after a couple of weeks.”
He alleged that CAAB does not allow their representatives to identify imported goods while it fails to make the delivery of them in time.
Asked about it, Group Captain Zakir Hassan, director, Shahjalal International Airport, said they prevent the outsiders from entering the vicinity on security grounds.
A good number of consignments remain stuck in the bay area of the airport as the clearing agents are not let in certain areas for customs clearance, said Sheikh Md Farid, president of Customs Clearing and Forwarding Agents Association in Dhaka.
Bangladesh’s trade with Australia will also be disrupted by the recent ban on air shipments to the continent, exporters said.
Recently, Australia has imposed the ban on air shipments from Bangladesh, Syria, Egypt, Yemen and Somalia on security grounds.
Siddiqur also urged the government to take necessary measures to resolve the issues immediately, or else it will hurt the country’s export.
