Over 100 killed in Nigeria gas tanker truck fire

Update : 25 Dec 2015, 05:19 AM

A gas tanker truck ignited an inferno at a crowded industrial gas plant in Nigeria, killing scores of people lining up to refill their cooking gas cylinders.

The blast happened when a truck was discharging butane gas at the facility in Nnewi town in Anambra state while customers were refilling their gas bottles, residents said.

Nnewi is a predominantly Christian community in southeast Nigeria.

By the time firefighters managed to put out the blaze, an Associated Press reporter counted the remains of more than 100 corpses.

The gas plant was completely destroyed and several houses around the scene damaged.
