Nine foreign films advance in Oscar race

Update : 20 Dec 2015, 07:36 PM

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences unveiled the nine films which have been short-listed for the Best Foreign-language film category, last Thursday. The hopeful entry from Bangladesh, Abu Shahed Emon’s Jalal’s Story, failed to make the list.

Another entry from the South-Asian sub-continent, Indian Chaitanya Tamhane’s Court, also failed to secure a spot.

Hungary’s Son Of Saul, is being regarded as the frontrunner, while Colombia’s Embrace Of The Serpent is the only Latin American flag-bearer in the absence of Brazil’s The Second Mother, Chile’s The Club and Argentina’s El Clan.

It seems like a bad year for Asian films since Jordan’s Theeb is the only one to be in the nominated from the continent. It did raise a few eyebrows since Taiwan’s The Assassin drew wide acclaim.
